In their second gig of this year’s CMJ showcase, the Papers blasted off at a jam-packed Backstage Bar–formerly the Annex — on Orchard Street in the heart of their LES stomping grounds.
Crushing it with a high-octane 10 song set, the Papers kindled the crowd with Berlin, fanned the flames with a slew of sexed-out new hits–Downtown Girl, Girls on Bikes, and Return Flight, among others–set ‘em up for the knock-out with a rollicking cover of Rosalyn, and burnt the spot down with their anthem, Jackie.
A New York-based music collective, led by native Gothamites HB Wellington & Lex Verlock, release their first mixtape project, entitled “New York Times.” This ll track offering includes their original single release “Jackie”, which now has more than 10,000 views on Youtube, as well as their NYC Fashion’s Night Out anthem, “Music Fashion Women.” With a nod to their roots and an eye to the future, The Wellington Papers adapted the original mixtape concept to a new genre, presenting it downloadable directly from their website www.wellingtonpapers.com
The Wellington Papers draw on a unique blend of hip hop, punk, surf rock, ska, and dub influences, and their lyrics–at once savvy, sincere, and light–reflect the unique adventures and misadventures of growing up and living in New York City. Their music pays homage to the electrifying clashup between uptown sophistication and downtown energy that defines life in the Big Apple.
The New York Times mixtape by The Wellington Papers — it’s sophisticatedly raw, hauntingly romantic, and refreshingly free.
“Jackie” The Wellington Papers’ first single is an archetypical love song… Unrequited. Follow HB as he pines for love lost, but finds an optimistic, if unresolved outcome. These lyrics, soaring over funky chops laid down by Lex verlock (guitar) and Doc Klein (Bass), make for good listening .. again and again…
The Wellington Papers came together naturally and out of necessity. A loose collective led by HB Wellington and Lex Verlock, The Wellington Papers make music that reflects the adventures, misadventures, and influences of growing up and living in New York City. Having come up through many of Gotham’s sub-cultures, The Wellington Papers combined experiences in graf, skate, streetwear, and clubs with their love of hip hop, punk, & surf rock, to create their own sound–a snapshot, a feeling that captures New York’s downtown restless energy after dark. It’s sophisticatedly raw, hauntingly romantic and most importantly, it’s not bound by rules, it’s free.
